SUMMARY:Volunteer Day
DESCRIPTION:Volunteer day is here again this Saturday\, 26th February. Hopefully there will be no Dudley\, Eunice\, Franklin or Gladys to thwart us (Forecast is cloudy but dry). \nIt is a great opportunity to meet and have a chat with fellow volunteers including trustees. Tea and coffee will be provided (at least for part of the day) \nAll the activities are well away from the larch felling. \nThe planned activities include: \n  \nCastle Pond\nA huge amount of Work has already been done so far this winter\, despite the weather\, to clear invasive rhododendron from around the pond. But there is more clearing to be done \nThere is also wildlife habitat to be created from the cut logs. \n  \nCastle Gardens\n \nMuch of the gardens around the old Polmaise Castle have been cleared of rhododendron . \nHowever there is still much more to clear to find parts of the gardens that have been lost for a century. Volunteers required for discovery. \n  \nTree Transplanting\nThe Forest Manager\, Amos has identified self seeded pine and other trees in Paterson’s Quarry that will\, in time\, be destroyed if not removed. \nVolunteers are needed to dig these up and replant them temporarily in the Walled Garden. They will be transplanted again into the woods in the autumn. Please bring a spade and bucket if you have them. \n  \nSquirrel Feed Boxes\n10 boxes have been set up in the woods to entice the squirrels away from the felling area. 6 volunteer families and a cub group are looking after 8 feed boxes keeping them filled and cleaned.\nThe squirrels are certainly using them and will be enticing them away from the felling zone. \nThere are two boxes that need adopting by volunteers. It would be to fill the box once a week. CCDT will supply the special squirrel food.  If you are interested please email volunteer@ccdt.org.uk and put “squirrel” in the title. \n  \nWhere & What Time\nIf you could spare a bit of time to help with any of the tasks above\, please come along to : \nThe seating area next to the Mud Kitchen (which is near the walled garden) at 10:00 am.  \nAs the main path from Gillies Hill is closed off due to the felling\, you will need to walk up and around the top of the felling area \nPlease dress in old clothes\, and sturdy footwear – it will be a bit muddy in places. Work gloves are recommended. At this time of year a bit of rain is to be expected. \nIf you are interested in cutting down rhododendron\, we have some spare loppers and wood saws\, but possibly not enough to go around. If you have your own please bring them along. \nYou may also wish to bring some sustenance and something to drink. There will be limited tea and coffee facilities. \nWe look forward to seeing you Saturday if you can make it along. Even if it’s just for a chat. \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Volunteer Day CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:*** Update 09:20 29th January — Due to the current high winds\, unfortunately this event has been CANCELLED *** \nThis Saturday\, 29th January is one of our planned volunteer days and there is a busy list of jobs for all abilities.  It is a great opportunity to meet and have a chat with fellow volunteers including trustees.  You may also wish to bring some sustenance and something to drink.  There will be the opportunity to cook your own sausages / burgers / marshmallows / etc. on one of the fires – bring a long fork.  Tea and coffee will be provided (at least for part of the day) \nPlease dress in old clothes\, and sturdy footwear – it could be a bit muddy in places. Work gloves are recommended. At this time of year a bit of rain is to be expected. \nWe look forward to seeing you Saturday if you can make it along. Even if it’s just for a chat. \nAll the activities are well away from the larch felling. \nThe planned activities include: \nWalled Garden –   Building on the great success of the walled garden volunteer day on 15th January\n –   Collecting loose bricks for reuse  /  setting out growing beds and polytunnel location / clearing vegetation  and brash / trimming hedges.\n –   Opportunity to drink tea and talk about future plans \nCastle Pond\n –   Work is ongoing to clear the area around the pond of invasive rhododendron. A lot has already been cut and the brash (leaves and stems) are to be burnt in two or three fires.\n –   Larger branches to be cut to create wildlife habitat.\n –   There will also be the opportunity to cut down rhododendron if that’s your thing.  If you are interested in cutting down rhododendron\, we have some spare loppers and wood saws\, but possibly not enough to go around. If you have your own please bring them along. \nSet Up Squirrel Feed Boxes\nWe are hoping that a family will volunteer to help set up a box. We are therefore looking for 8 families. The nursery will set up 2 boxes. \nEach volunteer family will be asked to fill the box once a week and let us know how much food has been used. They would need to clean the box with disinfectant at the same time. The boxes\, all food and disinfectant will be provided by the trust. \nIt will be for between 4 and 6 weeks\, until the squirrels have settled after the felling. \nIf you are interested in this exciting volunteer project please email volunteer@ccdt.org.uk in advance and put “squirrel” in the title. \nLog Splitting for Firewood\nThere will be an opportunity to hone your axe skills. Logs are to be split for firewood. \nYou can take a bag of logs home …..  and split enough logs…!! (bring a bag)
