Dark Woods Regeneration Project : Update 2 Oct 2025

The first part of the Dark Woods regeneration project will be to remove and clear the existing mature and windblown sitka spruce.

We are now able to confirm that harvesting operations are expected commence week beginning Monday 13th October.

For detailed information on the project’s background, please see our dedicated website here (created by TreeStory).

After a competitive tendering exercise, Ian Robb Timber Harvesting Ltd has been selected as our contractor for the project. IRTH is an experienced, independent harvesting company from Aberdeenshire, who specialise in low-impact harvesting methods on sensitive and small-scale sites such as the Dark Woods.

Next week we will hold a pre-start meeting with IRTH to finalise the operational logistics for the harvesting works, and agree outline timescales.

At this stage though, we expect harvesting work to take in the region of 3-4 weeks, with extraction and haulage of timber to take a further 3-4 weeks beyond this.

Once the post-harvesting/extraction condition of the site is confirmed, a groundworks operator may then be brought in support with site reinstatement, including core paths, access tracks etc.

Vehicle movements and activity around our work base and Dark Woods area is expected to increase over the next couple of weeks.

Safety signage will be erected soon, however we advise the public to avoid the area where possible, and observe all safety signs and advice from banksmen and other operatives and volunteers.

The commencement of this project marks an important step in re-planting and regenerating this well-loved part of our community woodland.

We will post regular updates as the project progresses.
