Community Woodland Larch Removal News Volunteer Sessions

SPHN Replanting News

After the successful replanting by community volunteers of over 2000 young native mainly broadleaved trees in 2024 and 2025 near 7 Winds path near the woodland sculptures (badger squirrel frog and Pine marten), in the area of Larch felled in early 2023, we are planning to plant a further 1800 trees this season. The map shows where this will take place, further up the path in a 2.2ha area probably in early March 2026 again by community volunteers.

The native tree species planted will include homegrown oak, aspen, Scottish elm, rowan, hawthorn and Scots pine (to help support our red squirrel population in future years) as well as accepting the holly, birch and young conifer natural regeneration which is taking place. Glades will be left unplanted to benefit birds such as tree pipit and there are maturing pine, sycamore and Douglas firs which will be left to grow on.

We have been successful in applying-for and receiving generous financial support from the International Tree Foundation, for which we are grateful. Planning is underway by volunteers for the planting, with ground preparation to plan, donated trees to assemble, other trees purchased from Scottish sources and tree protection to organize. We also need to continue to maintain the already-planted trees by weeding and keeping larch and rhododendrum at bay and checking tree tubes. To date we have a 90% success rate and the trees are doing really well in the excellent soils we have (see picture).
