Newsletter February 2026

Welcome to our monthly newsletter – keeping you up to date on Woodland matters.

Signs of spring

The woodland is coming alive and the signs of spring are beginning to appear. Still cold but some warmth in the sun on nice days. Snow drops, catkins and budding trees. In particular the walled garden is waking up so please pop in if you are passing to have a look.

Firewood sold out

Following a really successful winter season selling wood seasoned over the summer, we have now sold out. We will not have any more seasoned wood this winter but we will have wood available for you to fill your wood store for next year available soon.

If you have a wood store you would like filling please send us your details at logs@ccdt.org.uk

Dark Woods update

Following weather-related delays, groundworks contractor David Shanks will start work next week to repair and restore the main woodland paths, clear heavy brash, smooth deep ruts, improve drainage, and reinstate the woodland base and stacking areas to ensure safe access. Ground preparation will also take place at the upper end of the Seven Winds path in preparation for further replanting of the SPHN area.

At the same time, Ian Robb Timber Harvesting will return to complete thinning of diseased ash between the woodland base and cemetery and remove the remaining timber. For safety reasons, we are asking people to avoid the Dark Woods area where possible and follow all site instructions. Once the felling and reinstatement are complete, we will start the SPHN replanting work and will provide further details on this in the next few weeks

Milling weekend – Volunteers needed

The trust has booked Keith Threadgill to bring his mobile sawmill to cut some timber from logs for us over the weekend of the 14th  and 15th March. We are looking for volunteers to help over this weekend so if you have a few hours to spare we would be grateful for your help. The work involves lifting and stacking timber once it is cut and so a reasonable level of physical strength is required. You should have a pair of strong shoes and old clothes but we will supply other PPE as required. Refreshments will be provided. Contact logs@ccdt.org.uk for more information.

We are going to be cutting wood for our own use as tree stakes and other projects around the woodland.
