Newsletter May 2026

Welcome to our monthly newsletter – keeping you up to date on Woodland matters.

Bees

The walled garden is now home to a hive of Bees. They have settled in well and seem to be enjoying their surroundings and particularly the flowering fruit trees from our orchard in the lower half of the garden. The picture on the left is some of the first honeycomb from the hive and we look forward to our first harvest.

You are welcome to have a look, but please do not get too close or disturb the hive.

Safety Barrier for the Mine Adit

Many of you will know that the Community Woodland lies on an area that was mined for limestone during the late 19th Century.  The remains of the mining add greatly to the interest of the wood but there are a couple of sites where they also present a risk to people and we have installed safety measures as part of woodland management.  One of these is the mine vent that is fenced off near the school and the other is the mine adit entrance a few hundred metres up from the Gillies Hill entrance which has now been covered by a metal grille.

Orienteering Event

The woodland is hosting another orienteering event this week. Registration and start times between 5:30 and 7pm. Click on the linked image below for details.

No Mow May

The Trust is committing again to the No Mow May campaign to allow wildflowers and grasses to grow and flower.  We are minimising the area that we strim and mow during May to amenity areas and paths in the community woodland – we hope you enjoy all the flowers in our community woodland.
