Dark Wids Update January 2025

In our September 2024 Dark Wids Plans we announced that an independent review had been commissioned to assess the long term future of the Dark Wids. That review strongly recommended clear felling and re-stocking the area (see here). Several factors were cited, including the over-maturity of the non-native Sitka Spruce, significant storm damage (with an increasing likelihood of future incidents), and the growing safety hazard posed to the public and volunteers.

We have been busy since then. Quotes have been obtained, proposals submitted and site meetings have taken place.

We are now pleased to confirm that woodland consultancy TreeStory will be partnering with the Trust to manage the restructuring of the Dark Wids on our behalf. Edinburgh-based , but with a local staff presence, TreeStory come with a wealth of knowledge on sustainable forestry management and have worked alongside other Community Development Trusts in the past.

We will be meeting with TreeStory on-site over the coming weeks to continue the necessary planning and preparation. This process will involve obtaining numerous statutory consents, operational planning, contractor procurement, and consultation with our close neighbours. Currently, we plan to commence felling operations in Autumn 2025.

TreeStory will also work closely with the Trust to provide regular updates to the community about our plans for the Dark Wids felling and re-stocking project.

Our priority is to increase biodiversity, support native wildlife, and create exciting opportunities for community participation in developing a sustainable and attractive woodland area. This community woodland area (“New Wids”?) will be a space that can be enjoyed by us and future generations.
