Safety Fencing

As many of you in the community will know Gillies Hill Community Woodland and wider area contains relics of our industrial past. Mining and quarrying have taken place for hundreds of years across the woodland area. Below the dolerite quarries that we can see on the surface are limestone mines.

Close to Old Drove Road there is the entrance to a 35m mine shaft which has long since become overgrown to the point where it is not readily obvious.

To prevent accident and/or injury this area will be fenced off. The first activity will be a temporary fencing which will be erected this week. Following that, as resources allow, a more permanent solution will be found. The purpose of the fence is to mark the location and provide a deterrent to access.
